I watched the film Dear John this evening. To say it reduced me to tears is quite an understatement. The film stars Channing Tatum (John) and Amanda Seyfried (Savannah) as its main characters. The film is set in the early naughties. The film is set in the run up to the 2001 tragedy of the collapsing of the Twin Towers. It is a typical romance story but it is so tear jerking and unpredictable that is separates itself from the genre of love and romance.
John is enrolled in the army. He is back at home visiting his father when he runs into Savannah. It is a very unusual meeting but quite predictable. The relationship unravels from here. We see the romance blossoming from here. After two weeks have passed, John must return to the army and Savannah to school. They decide to write to each other. They write letters of four and five pages at a time to each other. We hear snippets of the letters and we instantly ant to read the whole thing. The letters bring tears to your eyes.
In the aftermath of the Twin Towers, John is faced with the decision of leaving the army and letting his men and country down or extending his time with the army. It is a tough decision. The men are given the weekend to decide what they want to do. John and Savannah spend a beautiful evening together, where they consummate the relationship. On Monday, John returns to the army. It is from here on the story brings tears. Although the relationship between the two should be stronger than ever, the fact that John has enlisted again has put a strain on the relationship. The letters continue, but, unfortunately, not for long.
This is a beautiful story about what love truly stands for. It show that what is meant to be will be and if it's for you, it will come to you. The only problem I have with this film is the letters. I've read the book and you hear all of the final letter. In the film, you only hear the opening lines. The book is well worth the read. The film and book, however, are very similar.
I would give this film 9 out of 10.
